DIVERSIFYING
the healthcare workforce

Learn More

WHO WE ARE.

Helix is a non-profit organization that hosts a free, two-week summer program for high school minority populations who are underrepresented in the medical field. Through the Helix educational experience, students will learn about different fields of health, meet and talk with local healthcare professionals, rotate through biological and clinical skills labs, and explore avenues for futures in health-oriented careers. Through this, we hope to ultimately diversify healthcare education.

THE CHALLENGE

Despite constituting 31.1% of the U.S. population as of 2016, only 10.3% of all medical school graduates are Hispanic or African American. As a profession built upon intimate and personal relationships, the field of healthcare requires people who can navigate cultural barriers to communicate with and comfort the physically and emotionally afflicted.

OUR SOLUTION

TWO-WEEK PROGRAM

Bring underrepresented students together at UC Berkeley for a free one-week program to generate excitement about health sciences and expose them to careers in health.

EXPOSURE TO HEALTH PROFESSIONALS

Immerse students in an environment saturated with accomplished health professionals to provide an opportunity to explore career options within a diverse field of healthcare.

HELIX SYMPOSIUM

Meet up at an end-of-summer Helix Symposium to share experiences and what they learned. Throughout the year, proved mentorship through monthly reunion workshops.
